De verticale klippen en de kolommen van dolerite stijgen 120m boven de vallei uit. De ongebruikelijke eigenschappen zijn het resultaat van vulkanische en eroderende krachten die reeds meer dan 100 miljoen jaar plaatsvinden. Dit unieke landschap en ecosysteem zijn een tegenstelling tot de dorre Karoo die het omringt.
